People Don't Have Ideas...
Ideas Have People. ~ Carl Jung
Famous Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung once stated “People don’t have ideas. Ideas have people.”
The idea of ideas is one that’s been pondered by all of the great philosophers throughout time. But, what’s interesting is how many of them find their way to similar but different descriptions of human consciousness in their own individual ways.
What’s more, is the tendency to run into a void of the unknown that may in fact be unknowable - and yet could be where most of reality resides!
It may seem strange to consider, but ideas themselves (much in the sense Jung was alluding to) may in fact exist separate of the people who have them. They could, in fact, be a force or entity or consciousness of their own that projected themselves through us.
I hope I’m not losing you here… if you want a good podcast to start with before this one that helps to pull at this thread gently, try this one with guest Caylan Ford:
The fact of the matter is, we live in a reality that we have to decipher, primarily, through our 5 biological senses. Which works great for all the human things that humans need to do. But, necessarily falls short of the totality of what the universe we live in actually is.
But wait, it’s worse than that…
Our consciousness is something that’s, quite obviously, outside of our 5 senses. We use it to decode our surroundings through sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing - but, it does a lot more than that. And it’s never more obvious than when you cut those 5 senses out of the equation.
Using literary and philosophic examples from Stephen Pressfield’s description of “The Muse” in his book “The War of Art”, and the idea of the “Spotlight of Consciousness” from famed atheist, Sam Harris; the picture of ideas coming to us from an outside source has never been more clear and yet, so baffling!
It’s possible that science is doomed to reach only so far past the small sliver of perceivable reality that we as humans exist, and no further. Leaving the vast majority of the depths of whatever it is that we all exist in unfathomed and, perhaps, unfathomable.
Some of those ‘far reaches’ that theoretical science and mathematics has gotten to so far speak loudly enough by themselves to the level of unintelligible properties within those depths. Things like:
Quantum Physics: Wikipedia
Multiple Dimensions: 10D Superstring Theory
Dark Matter/Energy: Encyclopedia Britannica
Things that come by way of religious and philosophical beliefs and ponderings throughout time may actually give a clearer lens to consider the origins, or progenitor, of consciousness through than science ever will.
Which science and scientists HATE, by the way.
But, the more one considers ones own thoughts, with honesty and humility, the more apt you’ll find you become to giving considerable latitude to the probability that we may in fact be the antenna for a separate and ethereal consciousness to project it’s thoughts into and through.
If things as rudimentary as space, time and physics are not as universal and all encompassing as we experience them being… well then… all bets are off.
