FDA Says "Misinformation" is Causing a Lowered US Life Expectancy
I thought it was Climate Change?
The Lizard Brain
These days, if it’s in the news, it’s probably related to health or the lack thereof.
With wars, pandemics, and economic uncertainty, everything comes back to “You’re probably going to die… and SOON!”.
This is what sells headlines, and it’s no secret. The news has been all about “If it bleeds, it leads” since the 80s. Appealing to the amygdala - the lizard brain - of the average person is evolutionarily guaranteed to result in a focusing of attention.
Basically, scare people if you want them to listen.
And what’s more universally scary than death?
Misinformation Kills You Faster!
The perennial topic of misinformation was cited yet again as the danger du jour, but this time, it wasn’t a politician or media personality wagging the finger.
In a recent interview with CNBC, FDA commissioner Dr. Robert Califf stated his concerns regarding how health misinformation is lowering life expectancies in the USA.
Quoted from this article, he said:
"I think there is a real need for better regulation of how we deal with this complex information […] I'm highly aware that in our society, people don't want government to have too much power, but I think specific authorities at FDA, FTC, other areas are gonna be needed."
So what does he have in mind exactly to aid in abetting this dangerous issue? He continued:
“I'm not arguing here that we should suppress free speech […] we have to counter [misinformation] with truthful information and reach many, many more people."
So, it sounds like the solution (as far as the FDA is concerned) is suppression. At least that’s what it sounds like to me. I’m all for allowing for open discourse to suss out what the truth is on any topic. But if the answer from one side of the issue is to “reach many, many more people”, that presumes that either
You smother all opposing views with more of yours in comparison (think the media and government propaganda blanketing over the pandemic)
Or, you artificially limit the opposing side’s views via social and technological gatekeeping measures. (think shadow banning, de-monetizing/de-platforming and censoring everyone throughout all internet information avenues)
Sounds more like a justification of the FUBAR we’ve all come to expect online around censorship than it is about open dialog.
But allow me to raise just two points about the above FDA claims:
Lowering Life Expectancy
It’s considered a matter of fact that life expectancy, which has been steadily on the rise since the start of the 1900s, is broadly a result of the advances in medical treatments and innovation in that time.
Things like antibiotics, vaccines and other chemical or mechanical interventions have allowed for people dying of illness or infirmity to live longer than they would have without them.
And although that is true in the broad strokes, if you broaden the strokes even further it appears that the bulk of the rise in human life expectancy in the first world had to do with systemic improvements in sanitation and general cleanliness.
Just the change from open to enclosed sewage systems stemmed the tide of airborne and food borne illnesses in a revolutionary way!
When the FDA makes the claim that misinformation regarding health care (read vaccines, primarily) is bound to lower the average American’s life expectancy, it’s based upon the idea that the length of life we typically enjoy these days (on average 77 years old) is largely propped up by pharmacology.
This is an ideological statement. It cannot be proven for (without assumption) and it cannot be tested for (without a mass rejection of pharma). The former is a circular argument and the latter is what they’ll do anything to prevent.
There’s an ever growing argument in the holistic circles regarding an improvement in the average American’s diet that would (in theory) extend the life expectancy of healthy humans more so than pharma claims to extend the lives of dying Americans.
And secondly, who are the FDA to speak about life limiting misinformation?!
It hasn’t been THAT long since they went to bat for pharma king Pfizer in court to try and prevent the disclosure of Pfizer’s mRNA injection’s safety data to the public (whom they insisted take the treatment in the meantime) for FIFTY-FIVE YEARS!
Meanwhile, we are only 2 years into a legally shielded and highly censored world wide long term experiment that is already seeing a parallel increase in all-cause mortality in percentages that would, at any other point in history, be considered a once in a lifetime cataclysmic event!
You wanna keep talking about dangerous misinformation, FDA?
Cancers, heart damage, neurological disorders, fertility and pregnancy issues/miscarriages. Seems pretty dangerous information to suppress and censor.
I agree that there’s a ton of dangerous mis/disinformation online… everyone knows that. And I’m all for cleaning it up! But, just like Califf said himself, “we have to counter [misinformation] with truthful information”. And for one side to steelman their views by the power of news and social media algorithms isn’t how that’s done.
To quote St. Augustine:
“The truth is like a lion. You don’t have to defend it. Let it lose. It will defend itself.”
